Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

File:Cara-oculta-luna.jpg[edit]
Hello, thanks for uploading a new version of File:Cara-oculta-luna.jpg. It was such a different image I returned the old version, but I was wondering if you could upload the other version again as a new file. Thank you. Fotaun (talk) 20:30, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- At first I thought they were different photos, but I think one is just rotated. The text says that it is NASA photo AS16-3021 and that is what I uploaded. Can't you just go to that file and click "revert" to get the one I uploaded back? If not, I can upload it again. Bubba73 (talk) 21:54, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Got skills?[edit]
Since you seem to have photomanipulation skills, I wonder if you can try your hand at bringing out the inscription hardly legible in the img in this section [2]. Note that the full text of the inscription is given earlier in that section; on the iron itself the inscription is rendered on two lines; only the first line is visible in the img. The background starts dark, then is light, then turns dark again. Just at this last transition you can barely recognize the words Gage at Cavendish. Strangely, in some ways it's easier to make out the words when "stepping back" at low zoom levels, versus blown up at high zoom, because the brain is good at recognizing whole words in the presence of noise. For this reason we probably want the scroll box in the article to be smaller (not as tall, which will induce lower magnification), but I'm still deciphering the "wide image" template syntax. Any thoughts on this aspect will be appreciated as well.
The img you see there I cropped and rotated from [3] -- you may want to start over from this high-res img since I'm not sure my software (MS Office Picture Manager) doesn't do some crude thing in rotating that fuzzifies the image. (Note the rotation was not a multiple of 90deg -- a few extra degrees added or shaved to achieve horizonality -- I wonder if that causes more loss than a rotation of n*90.)
Any contrast magic, sharpening, etc. you can come up with that would make even just those words distinctly legible would be greatly appreciated. And anything more than that would be wonderful.
If you need to discuss then here is fine but if I don't answer in 24 hrs please leave a talkback for me at en.wp EEng (talk) 07:29, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

- It's not that far off. It was shot with natural daylight lighting and the reddish-brown is the real color of a red-tailed hawk. Perhaps the monitors you are using are not calibrated properly? -- Ram-Man 12:04, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:IBM 7030 Stretch circuit board.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:IBM 7030 Stretch circuit board.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. to your userpage!Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.
We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.
If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.
Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!
A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

to your userpage!September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.
If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020! Please help with this survey[edit]
Dear Bubba73,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 08:27, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
Good work[edit]
I've been running across your photos all evening (and liking them). I started out alphabetizing the statues, busts and relief portraits at Vicksburg. Your photo of the Jefferson Davis relief portrait at his birthplace was hi res enough to read the sculptor's signature. Hibbard did at least 3 unique sculptures of Davis. I confirmed the sculptor of the Jefferson Davis bust at the site of his capture.[5] Question: Do you know if the plaster bust inside the museum is identical to the bronze one atop the memorial outside? They seem to be, but I'd rather not guess.
Best (and keep up the good work), == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:50, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you - I've uploaded thousands of photos. I don't remember about the bust (but I think the one inside is probably twice life-size). I did photos at his Kentucky site and the site of his capture near Irwinville, GA. There is a bust on a pedstal outside and a bust inside - I photographed both of them.
- For the relief portrait, I had to increase the contrast to make the words legible (it was dark in there).
- The camera and lenses makes a big difference. Mine all use a Nikon DLSR, first a Nikon D40, then a D3300 for a short time, then a D7100 for long time, and a D600 for about the last 2.5 years. And I've upgraded the lenses along the way too. And a sharp lens makes a difference! For instance, I took this photo Monday of a house on the NRHP from 1/4 mile away. I had to shoot it over a field to get a view of it. You can easily see the mortar between the bricks. Bubba73 (talk) 06:06, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- Besides doing a couple hundred at Vicksburg, I did a couple hundred at Gettysburg. Bubba73 (talk) 06:09, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- I know nothing about cameras, but appreciate a good photo. I started the table at List of monuments of the Gettysburg Battlefield about a decade ago. Unfortunately, as the National Park Service updates its Gettysburg website it changes the url for each monument's page. So the article went from no dead links to hundreds. Now and then I go back and fix a couple dozen at a time. But it's tedious to redo what's already been done. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 13:07, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
@BoringHistoryGuy: I like this one of Longstreet at Gettysburg. Bubba73 (talk) 05:03, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:African-American Monument, Savannah, GA, US.jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:African-American Monument, Savannah, GA, US.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. - note to self: Photo date 4/9/2015. Bubba73 (talk) 16:40, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding the name of the sculptor to the file's description. Can you provide more information about the en:provenance of the statue. There's no unrestricted freedom of panorama for 3D works of art in the United States as explained here which means that there's a good possibility en:African-American Monument itself may still be under copyright protection. As the person who took this photo, you would own the copyright on the photo itself, but it would be considered a derivative work which means that the copyright of the statue needs to be considered; so, unless you're also the artist who created the statue, you aren't going to own the copyright over it. If the statue is still under copyright protection, you can't upload a photo of it to Commons without the consent of its copyright holder as explained here. Simply going by the date it was installed, I don't see how this can be kept without the artist's consent. One option in cases like this would be to upload the file locally to English Wikiepdia as non-free content. There are lots of restrictions, however, placed on such use and such a file would pretty much be only acceptable to use in the article about the statue itself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:01, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- I don't really know anything else about the statue. I think it is important, but I don't know when it was done. There is some info on contacting the African American Monument Association. I'll see if they have a website. Bubba73 (talk) 23:24, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- This has some info: https://gosouthsavannah.com/historic-district-and-city/monuments/african-american-monument.html Bubba73 (talk) 23:31, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- A statue from 2002 is going to be assumed to be protected by copyright unless it can be shown otherwise. I'm sure it's an important statue, but that doesn't really matter when it comes to COM:L and COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. If the copyright holder's COM:OTRS/CONSENT can't be obtained, this is going to need to be deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:33, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- The artist is Dorothy Radford Spradley, who was a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design, about 75 years old, doesn't seem to be there now. The only contact information was a mailing address. Maybe I can write to her and ask her to fill out the form. Bubba73 (talk) 01:38, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
- Well, I'm not going to write a letter to an elderly person at their home to ask them to fill out a form. So go ahead and cancel the monument. Bubba73 (talk) 05:44, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
- Nobody is going to "cancel" the monument, but the file cannot be kept without the artist's consent and will need to be deleted. However, there is another option here that would most likely will work. You took the photo, right? Do you still have it saved somewhere on your computer? If you do, you can upload the file locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content for use in en:African-American Monument. You can choose the same license you chose when you uploaded the photo to Commons for the photograph, and then use en:Template:Non-free 3D art for the copyright license for the statue and en:Template:Non-free use rationale for the non-free use rationale that's needed to comply with non-free content use criterion 10c. If you want to see some examples of how this might be done, look at en:File:MSU Bronze Sparty 2.jpg, en:File:Air Force Monument by Leonard McMurry, Oklahoma City.jpg, en:File:Abraham Lincoln (Cecere).jpg, or en:File:Agora by Magdalena Abakanowicz.jpg. As long as you took the photo, the same thing should work for this file. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:44, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

File:Brunswick Georgia African American Cultural Center.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Re: Question about file name[edit]
The "WV" stands for Wikivoyage, not West Virginia. It's to identify (using the file name) that the image is catered for the top banner of that page on Wikivoyage. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:53, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- OK, I understand! Where is it used? Bubba73 (talk) 04:57, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- You can find that on the file usage section. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:45, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@OhanaUnited: At File:Western Nashville WV banner.jpg, it only gives the original file:
The following page uses this file:
File:Statues at Parthenon, Nashville, TN, US.jpg
Bubba73 (talk) 06:06, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- The banner image was previously used in voy:Nashville/Western. But subsequently that page was merged back into voy:Nashville so it no longer shows up on file usage. OhanaUnitedTalk page 13:58, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

File tagging File:Keye Luke publicity 1.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Keye Luke publicity 1.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Keye Luke publicity 1.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Autopatrol given[edit]
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, the possibility to overwrite files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 19:06, 11 December 2023 (UTC) @Abzeronow:
